April 11, 2010 MIAMI-Last week, the Christian Family Coalition asked you to call Florida State Senator Don Gaetz, chairman of the Health Regulation Committee, to ask him to place the parental notification bill on the agenda for an up or down vote as soon as possible!!!
Well, your phone calls worked, hundreds of you responded and SB-2446, the Florida Parental Notification Bill has now been placed on the Health Regulation Committee Agenda.
A parental notification law has been in effect since July 2005, requiring a performing or referring physician to give actual notice (in person or by telephone at least 48 hours prior to beginning the procedure) or constructive notice (in writing mailed at least 72 hours prior to beginning the procedure) to a parent or guardian of a minor's intent to terminate her pregnancy. However, from July 2005 to June 2009: 2,207 waiver notices have been filed and 2,082 have been granted!!!
As the law stands now, judges in Florida do not need to give ANY REASON for allowing a minor to get an abortion without notifying her parents! Just recently, a school in Washington state transported a 15 year old girl to an abortion clinic, DURING SCHOOL HOURS, without telling her parents! Furthermore, abortion clinics are NOT REQUIRED to report child abuse (i.e., 15 year old girl is pregnant by a 22-year old man).
Christian Family Coalition is supporting this bill which would force judges in Florida to include factual findings and legal conclusions relating to a minor's maturity and the reason why the waiver was granted. It would also force abotion clinics to report child sexual abuse!
