State Senator Ellyn Setnor Bogdanoff: A Profile in Courage

MIAMI-Today, the Christian Family Coalition (CFC), Florida's premier human rights and social justice organization applauded Florida State Senator Ellyn Setnor Bogdanoff for her support of religious equality (freedom to pray) in the State Senate's historic 31-8 vote a few weeks ago.

While Bogdanoff initially supported the legislation, she withdrew her endorsement when the bill was amended to take out language that mandated the message was non sectarian. "Not having that language in there gives me pause," Bogdanoff said at the time, adding that students of minority religions should never have to feel uncomfortable at school over their beliefs.

However, after meeting with the Christian Family Coalition (CFC) and her constituents during our annual "Day at the Capitol" on January 26th, she decided to vote "yes" on religious equality (freedom to pray).  The meeting was very good, very respectful, and very appropriate.

"We agree with Senator Bogdanoff's concerns that students of minority religions should never have to feel uncomfortable at school over their beliefs, this exactly why we support the bill in its current form which leaves the content of the prayer, sectarian or otherwise, at the sole discretion of the student", stated Anthony Verdugo, Founder and Executive Director, Christian Family Coalition (CFC).

"Senator Bogdanoff is an inspirational and uplifting example of what happens when a fair-minded legislator listens to her constituents and deliberatively weighs the impact a proposal will have on the lives of students in our state, such were happenings on her  journey to religious equality (freedom to pray) for all children of faith", concluded Verdugo.
